Environmental Stewardship & Education
Puʻuwai uses traditional Hawaiian canoe paddling as a platform for environmental education, cultural stewardship, and lifelong connection to the lands and waters of Kauaʻi.
Our Approach
For more than 35 years, Hui O Mana Ka Puʻuwai Outrigger Canoe Club has connected generations of Kauaʻi residents to the ocean, shoreline, and cultural traditions that sustain our island community.
Founded in 1991, Puʻuwai believes that true athletic excellence begins with a deep understanding of place. Through our youth and adult programs, paddlers learn that caring for the land and sea is a responsibility that extends far beyond the canoe.
Guided by the Hawaiian values of Aloha, Hō‘ihi (respect), and Ikaika Kākāuha (strength through discipline and perseverance), our members participate in educational and stewardship activities that foster environmental awareness, cultural understanding, and community responsibility.
Building a Sense of Place
Puʻuwai strengthens participants’ connection to the lands and waters of Kauaʻi through place-based education and cultural learning. Members explore topics including:
Hawaiian history and cultural practices
Land and water rights
Traditional relationships between people and place
Access to natural resources and public shorelines
The importance of protecting coastal and marine ecosystems
By understanding the history and significance of the places where we paddle, our members develop a stronger sense of kuleana and stewardship for future generations.
Environmental Education
Puʻuwai provides environmental learning opportunities for youth, families, and community members through programs focused on:
Native and introduced plant species
Marine and freshwater ecosystems
Native birds and wildlife
Water quality monitoring and testing
Reef-safe practices and ocean protection
Sustainable resource use
Waste reduction and reusable water bottle initiatives
Participants gain a greater understanding of how individual choices affect the health of our environment and learn practical ways to reduce their impact on local ecosystems.
Stewardship in Action
As caretakers of our practice site and surrounding shoreline, Puʻuwai members actively participate in environmental stewardship projects throughout the year, including:
Community beach cleanups
Shoreline maintenance and restoration
Invasive species removal
Native plant restoration and reintroduction
Habitat enhancement projects
Community volunteer service activities
These efforts help preserve the health and beauty of Kauaʻi’s coastal environments while providing meaningful opportunities for hands-on environmental engagement.
Community Outreach
Through educational fairs, open houses, and community events, Puʻuwai shares environmental and cultural knowledge with paddlers, families, visitors, and residents. These programs help expand awareness of environmental challenges facing Hawaiʻi while encouraging community participation in stewardship efforts.
At Puʻuwai, paddling is more than a sport. It is a pathway to environmental responsibility, cultural connection, and lifelong stewardship of the places we call home.
